Intro to Integrative and Holistic Oncology Consultation with Dr. Dudley

Dr. Dudley is a trained oncologist, with a special  interest in what are known as “the Sex Cancers” including breast, prostate, ovarian, cervical, and uterine cancer.  However,  the principles of  The Metabolic Approach to Cancer,  which is the foundation of holistic and integrative oncology, are broadly applicable to all cancers.

Attached to the end of this document is his “curriculum vitae” which is his professional resume. As you can verify, he was well schooled at major renowned institutions and began practice in 1984. He practiced enthusiastically for several years until a frustrating unease began to set in. Over and over, he recommended the same basic approaches of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation to patients. And, over and over, some patients improved and were apparently cured of their illness, while others did not fare so well. His colleagues explained this with genetics, random chance, or just didn’t know. Those explanations did not sit well with him. He figured that if he was providing a constant and reproducible service, yet getting variable outcomes, it only made sense to him that the difference was due to something or somethings that the patients were or were not doing. So, one day he began to ask his best performing patients “what are you doing on the side to help yourself heal from your illness?” And the answers were forthcoming and involved major lifestyle changes. Shortly, the categories sorted out as

1.) Nutritional (toxicities as well as deficiencies),
2.) Exercise,
3.) Sleep, and
4.) Stress Management (mind-body).

He began taking notes and doing his own research. Very little high-level research existed for years, mostly testimonials and basic science data. But little by little, the evidence did begin to accumulate and  now at the present time  we are seeing a virtual explosion of interest in Integrative or “functional” oncology. Dr. Dudley has come to regard these concepts as “the missing links” in cancer management. Just as the greater part of an iceberg lies below the surface of the water, he believes these concepts have been hidden or ignored for way too long.

After all, it was the part of the iceberg below the water line that sank the Titanic!

In recent years Dr. Dudley has become much more organized and dedicated to the teaching and implementation of these principles. And he has seen profound overall improvements in the outcomes of his patients and clients who can embrace these techniques. Dr. Dudley also completed formal training at the University of Michigan’s Integrative Oncology Scholars Program sponsored by the National Institute of Health/National Cancer Institute, and with Nasha Winters, Naturopathic Doctor through her Mastermind Course in the Metabolic Approach to Cancer. 

At the beginning of your encounter with Dr. Dudley, you will both be evaluating each other to see if there is a good fit to work together. Prior to the 1st virtual or in person visit, we request that you fill out or supply the following information. Your willingness and cooperation in doing this is an essential piece in determining if you are a good fit together.

1. The intake form reveals demographic information and a lot about your personal health and lifestyle habits.   The intake form includes a  long questionnaire created by Dr. Dudley’s mentor, Dr. Nasha Winters, a Fellow of the American Board of Naturopathic Oncology, whose philosophy and teachings he largely follows. Dr. Dudley urges you to read her book, The Metabolic Approach to Cancer, and another favorite, Anti-Cancer Living by Lorenzo Cohen, PhD, who is the former head of Integrative Oncology at the MD Anderson Cancer Institute where Dr. Dudley trained. Please complete as much of the questionnaire as possible, either by editing it with Adobe Acrobat or printing it out and scanning/sending it back in to Dr. Dudley to read prior to the first appointment.

2. Please supply as many pertinent medical records as you can. This would especially include your diagnosis, pathology report, any operations undertaken, and all conventional and holistic treatments which you have undertaken up until the present time. Also, please supply the results of scans, especially recent ones. Once the above has been received, Dr. Dudley will schedule a virtual or in person visit and will allot one hour for this meeting. A lot will be covered and as many of your questions as possible will be answered, which will help you decide on your end if you are a good fit to work together.

The evaluation is composed of several steps:
1. Establish the exact status of your cancer.
2. Review all the conventional treatments you have received, past and current.
3. Review all the holistic treatments you have undertaken, including supplements, past and present. 4. Determine what additional testing is to be recommended.
5. Create an individualized approach to your cancer and your “terrain”, which is comprised of all your individual characteristics.
6. Regular revisits of all the above for response and tolerance.

As stated above, testing will be advised to  fully evaluate your unique situation. We will discuss how these tests can be obtained. Some of the tests are considered conventional medicine tests and might be covered by insurance. The holistic tests are generally not covered by insurance. You are ultimately responsible for the costs of all testing. We will do our best to make you aware of the cost of the tests that are recommended.

The most common holistic tests are:
1. NutrEval by Genova Labs, a blood and urine test.

3. Nutrition Genome. A saliva test looking for individual mutations, or snp’s (single nucleotide polymorphisms), which can reveal opportunities for “epigenetic” optimization. 
4. The Dutch Test Complete, a urine test of sex and stress hormone levels, and how these are metabolized by your body. We will have to request a kit to be sent to you if you choose to have this test performed.

Once the results of the tests are in, we will schedule a second one-hour meeting to discuss test results and begin to make initial recommendations.

Subsequent visits will be scheduled on an as needed basis. It is not unusual for weekly visits to be required initially.
The cost of the visits is  not covered by insurance.  You are responsible for the fees for your consultation, supplements, substances, holistic testing, and treatments. If it is available in your country, you will receive an invitation to affiliate with and receive a discount on supplements from Fullscript, an online dispensary. This is offered to encourage you to use the highest quality medications and not to substitute with products of questionable quality, as well as to offset the price of the treatment plans and lab tests.

Dr. Dudley believes strongly in the concept that YOU are the CEO (Chief Executive Officer) of your health recovery and maintenance. You must  study to learn as much as possible about the concepts of the Metabolic Approach to Cancer. We cannot possibly answer every question that arises, and you will likely need additional advisors along the way, which we may be able to recommend.

Our arrangement is an “at will” arrangement, meaning that we both must have an ongoing commitment to continue to work together. If Dr. Dudley sees  a problem on his end, he  will supply written notification and provide you two weeks to seek another integrative specialist to continue your journey. You may terminate the arrangement at any time with written notice (email that has been acknowledged is acceptable). Any fees that are outstanding for services already rendered will remain due and payable.
